HELEN ANNE EGBERT (previously STRETCH) June 18th, 1938 to May 31st, 2016

On May 31st, 2016, Helen died peacefully at home with her daughter Marnie at her side. She will be missed by her husband, Gary, daughters Tamra and Marnie (Steve), son Bob (Theresa), stepdaughters Jan (Wayne) and Michelle (Tige), grandchildren Zack (Nicole), Kendall, Luke, Gabriel (Ashley), Robbie, Andrew, Matthew, Logan, Sean, Ryan, Jenn, Jessie, Amy, and great grandson Phoenix. She was a favourite aunt to her nephew, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.

Waiting for her in heaven are her parents Wasyl and Mary Mindiuk, her brother Peter and his wife Phyllis, her sister Edna, her nephews Brian and Gary, along with many spoiled pets.

Helen was born in rural Saskatchewan in 1938 where her family owned and farmed several acres of land and lived in a small rustic two-bedroom log house. After many years of living in Saskatchewan, her family decided to move to Ontario. Two years later, the West beckoned to her father, so back they went, this time settling in Owlseye, Alberta. Helen’s career aspirations brought her to Edmonton, and in 1966 she earned her B.Ed. from the University of Alberta. She went on to earn her M.Ed. in 1969. In 1981, she and Gary began building their beautiful home and yard in St. Albert, which is where she lived until she left us.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Nothing gave her more joy than spending time with her children and her grandchildren. Her husband, Gary, was her guiding light. Always at her side and eager to please her, Gary was the rock that she leaned on for many of life's challenges.

She worked as a dedicated and passionate teacher, administrator and consultant for Edmonton Public Schools from 1958 - 1993. Helen’s great spirit was felt in school classrooms, throughout hallways, within staffrooms, on sports fields, and at Central office. She was an inspirational leader and a mentor to many others who emulated her dedication to education. Her legacy of charity, community service, responsible citizen, and love for animals will remain as a symbol and model of greatness for all her children and grandchildren.

So many students, colleagues, friends and family members dearly loved Helen. She has left an indelible mark on each of their hearts.

She will be remembered always.

Darlene and Diane, you were her angels.

She loved gardening but wishes for no flowers. Instead, please consider a donation to The Wild Horses of Alberta Society. This request may come as a surprise to many, but horses were a special part of her young life. On particularly cold days, her father would harness the horses to the wagon and pull her the three miles to school.

Let’s celebrate a life well-lived, please join us on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 3:00 pm at Evergreen Funeral Home at 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton, AB.
